Unique in its take on the modern music festival, Interlocken will feature a smaller amount of bands playing longer sets on multiple days, and will also create exclusive and historical collaborations throughout the weekend. Interlocken’s two main stages will feature full two-hour sets that will run seamlessly from one to the other without breaks between performances, giving the audience a unique and singular experience, as the music will be continuous throughout the weekend.

Festival organizers are excited to confirm that Widespread Panic will perform on two of the four nights, with one set featuring a special collaboration with John Fogerty performing his classic songs from the Creedence Clearwater Revival era. Furthur is confirmed to play on three of the four nights, with one set featuring an exclusive performance of Workingman’s Dead, the Grateful Dead’s classic fifth record, originally released in 1970. The Black Crowes will perform on two of the four nights, while The String Cheese Incident will also play on two of the four, with one featuring the debut collaboration of the Zac Brown Incident, with Zac Brown of the Zac Brown Band, a bold, one-time-only, experiment by two artists who are masters of their craft and have built loyal fan-bases by touring consistently and creating memorable experiences for their audience every time they hit the stage.

Interlocken, is a 4-day music festival, with an emphasis on world class music, locally sourced food and sustainability. Artist pre-sale tickets will be available beginning May 22 at 10am EST and general “early bird” tickets will go on sale May 23 at 10am EST. All Tickets will be sold via interlockenfestival.com.

Interlocken was created by industry veterans Dave Frey and Peter Shapiro. Frey founded the HORDE Festival while Shapiro owned New York City’s historic rock club, “Wetlands Preserve.” He also produced U2′s award-winning film U23D and currently publishes Relix Magazine as well as being the proprietor of Brooklyn Bowl and The Capitol Theater in Port Chester, NY. With the pedigree of these two producers, Interlocken is set to be one of the country’s most unique and dynamic events. Frey and Shapiro’s sense for innovation and creativity together with the backdrop of this beautiful setting in the Blue Ridge Mountains is certain to make for an unforgettable weekend.

Interlocken was named for traditions central to both Frey and Shapiro: The inter-locking performances presented at Wetlands and the continuous uninterrupted music featured between the two stages at HORDE. Interlocken’s conceptual theme will touch all elements of the event: “when something ends, another begins.” This simple yet powerful ethos of sustainability will be integrated into camping, lodging, food, drink, transport offerings as well as specialized onsite activities.

“Most festivals these days are trying to be everything to everyone — very eclectic with an emphasis on a large number of artists in various genres,” says Shapiro. “With Interlocken, we want to break away from that mold and create something more identifiable and distinct.”

After looking at several sites around the US, Frey and Shapiro decided upon Oak Ridge in Nelson County for its majestic beauty, size and proximity to Charlottesville. Its infrastructure and acreage allow it to naturally accommodate mass gatherings. The estate has 4,800-plus-acres and is privately owned; it was originally deeded to two Bristol merchants by the King of England. The most well-known owner was Thomas Ryan, a Wall Street financier, who used the property as a rural retreat and built a professional sized steeplechase racetrack for his horses and a private railroad station. After the Holland family purchased Oak Ridge in 1989, John C. Holland, Jr. placed high priority on restoring the Oak Ridge racetrack using reclaimed building materials. The festival will take place on that racetrack, which is the length of six football fields.

The town of Arrington in Nelson County has a stop sign, a post office, a general store and a recycling center. Over the past 10 years, local craft breweries and, most recently, local hard cider distilleries, have joined several local wineries — some dating back to the Thomas Jefferson era. Nelson County is a well-known destination for the outdoor recreation enthusiast and is becoming a hotbed of locally made small-batch craft spirits. The festival will offer general camping in the stunning surrounding Blue Ridge area as well as VIP camping inside the concert site.

“We are very excited to welcome the Interlocken festival to Oak Ridge,” says Oak Ridge owner Rhonda Holland. “Several concert promoters have approached us in the past about using the track. We have always been concerned about the impact that this would have on the surrounding community and the land. Dave and Peter have a history of caring about the communities and land where they produce events. We look forward to working with the Interlocken team for many years to come.”

Since both Frey and Shapiro have a strong history of running environmentally conscious organizations, Interlocken will be a particularly green undertaking, utilizing carbon offsetting, locally sourced food, recycling programs and many more initiatives. The festival has engaged a person closely associated with the property who is a local sustainable food provider to help Interlocken source food, beverages and services from Central Virginia.

“As a life-long concert goer, Peter has a fan-first approach to the events he produces and I think his audiences respond to that as they feel his respect and generosity,” says Frey. “He creates events that he would want to attend himself, and that really sets them apart from everything else out there.”

Technicians of Distortion is in support of Anselmo’s upcoming solo release, Walk Through Exits Only, due out July 16 (Housecore Records/Megaforce) and will take the group to a total of sixteen important markets over a three-week period. Warbeast, who are signed to Anselmo’s Housecore Record label and just released their new album Destroy (produced by Anselmo), along with industrial doom and drone metal one-man band Author and Punisher, will provide support on all dates.

Once again abiding by their fundamental rule that “we must always be in the same room when writing,” what Fuck Buttons have created on Slow Focus is something that feels more close-up than ever before, a first-person view through winding pathways set against a frequently aggressive and constantly evolving terrain. It’s an ominously shimmering mirage that could only have come from their own volition. “Slow Focus seemed like a very apt title when considering the sentiment of the music,” comments Benjamin John Power, “It almost feels like the moment your eyes take to readjust when waking, and realising you’re in a very unusual and not a particularly welcoming place. We like to think that we create our own new landscapes, and with this it’s a very alien one.”

You could argue this is the first album where the pair have really gone all in, taking control right down to producing it at their own Space Mountain studio. “We’ve used producers as safety nets in the past,” says Andrew Hung, “but we’ve always had a very specific idea of what our music should sound like and so it became about following the logical path.”

Between them, Fuck Buttons have been busy behind the scenes in the intermediate four years since Tarot Sport, but they were flung out into the perception of the global public last year when Danny Boyle opted to use their music in his breathtaking Olympics opening ceremony in London, after recommendations from techno veterans Underworld. Now they’re ready to face the limelight again in full, with a string of European festival dates coming up, including Primavera, Glastonbury and Green Man.

It is interesting how fascinated everyone seems to be with change. Where did the notion come from that things don’t change? “Why did I shave the beard”, “why did I change the way I dress or look”, “what does it mean?” It means that change can happen. That I am not made of stone or molded to metal like the golden calf. Is it possible that at the age of 23 I could believe something and then at the age of 33 I could believe something else. Yes. After all I changed when I was 23 to take on the Chassidic lifestyle. Was it easy to show up in class that first day wearing a Yarmulke? NO. There was that little critic in my head saying, “Oh now you are religious?” But I did it anyway because of love. Was it easy to not wear it? NO. There is the voice saying, “Oh now you’re not religious?” “I told you it was all BS, I told you he would fall.” Is it possible to be both, to have mixed feelings, to see what it feels like to live in different garments, to try out different ideas? What is this tendency to want to keep things static or the same? “I’m a rebel, soul rebel… soul adventurer”. -Bob Marley

The music video for “Pyrakantha” was filmed by director Colin Kennedy, who spent many early evening shooting skateboarder Danny Garcia as he takes a journey through some of Kennedy’s favorite parts of Los Angeles as the final moments of daylight (“the Magic Hour”) gave way to night. The beautiful winding journey taken in the video mirrors the lush and detailed sonic landscapes found in the song itself.

In an effort to present an object that integrates all the inter-connected components of this release, Third Man Records has gone the extra mile with their limited-edition version of the soundtrack in pioneering a never-before released method for vinyl records.

Both LPs in the set are blindingly reflective metalized discs. Disc one is platinum and disc two is gold. These are the first-ever commercially available records made using these precious metals via this process.

Not stopping there, the records come housed in a entirely unique laser-cut wooden LP jacket riveted to aluminum spines. They started with a spectacular 7000 capacity rave in Paris live streamed on You Tube with more than one million viewers, followed by a May 3 performance in London, and will venture on to Brussels, Barcelona, Los Angeles, Tokyo, New York City, Montreal, Mexico, Sydney and Berlin in the coming months.

Over the years, Ed Banger has released music by everyone from Rick Rubin to LFO to, recently, Laurent Garnier, and the new collection represents such diverse thinking. The imprint’s illustrious history and adventures have been documented in a new photographic book by label designer So Me called ‘Travaille. Famille. Party’ – Work. Family. Party.

As Pedro explains “After managing Daft Punk between 1996 and 2008 I wanted to create my own history. By creating Ed Banger records I launched my own musical adventure in a way. I learnt so much with Daft Punk, I owe them a lot. Celebrating this 10th anniversary is very emotional, I’m proud I managed to write a pretty nice musical chapter in my life. Daft Punk as chapter #1 and Ed Banger records as chapter #2 is pretty cool.”

A decade in, Ed Banger shows no sign of slowing down. “I am a happy boy. It’s been 10 years of fun, travel, hard work and discovery. I feel lucky too, I met some strong artists, they are Ed Banger records. My main goal is to keep challenging ourselves. We are an alternative label, we are free to go where we want.”

Among the many things that Andy achieved in his lifetime (and in the years following), a phonograph album release, the staple of stand-up comedians in his time, never happened – until now. Andy and His Grandmother is material never heard before, a skimming from 82 hours of micro-cassette tapes that Andy recorded during 1977-79. Andy regarded the micro-tape recorder as a fantastic new way of capturing his hoaxing, and carried it with him everywhere, for use at any given moment. Real life was the ultimate frontier for him, and these tapes demonstrate the heart of Andy’s comedy. With gusto, he involves those closest to him, as well as total strangers, in put-ons, falsehoods and other provocations, pushing the limit on logic and emotional investment in everyday situations from the trivial to the deeply personal until any suspension of disbelief is out of the question for all involved, and everyone becomes fully immersed in whatever scenario Andy is suggesting as the new reality.

With so much material on hand, Drag City turned to a writer, producer and comedian whose resume indicated to us that he was a true child of Kaufman’s twisted talent. Since the late 90s, Vernon Chatman’s work has been experienced by television viewers and aficionados of South Park, Wonder Showzen, Xavier: Renegade Angel, The Heart She Holler, and Doggie Fizzle Televizzle, as well as fans of the Drag City DVD release Final Flesh. Vernon dug deeply into the tapes, working with editor Rodney Ascher (director of the notorious, controversial, and even acclaimed Room 237 documentary) to come up with a concept for a single LP that would include several dozen excerpts. Along the way, Vernon produced several tracks, adding effects to pieces that were clearly unfinished (in particular, “Sleep Comedy”) and drafting SNL’s Bill Hader to provide narration for the journey. The finished album, with liner notes from Vernon and Kaufman cohort Bob Zmuda is a work of comedy for our times – one that was performed over thirty years ago. Andy And His Grandmother is out July 16th on Drag City.

Another facet of Skate And Surf Festival is “The Break Contest,” the official unsigned band competition and a staple of The Bamboozle. After several months with over 400 bands competing from the tri-state area, the finals were held on May 4 at Encore Event Center in Freehold, New Jersey (part of iPlay America’s entertainment complex) and Bears And Motorcycles from Long Island, New York emerged as the winner. The band won a coveted main stage performance slot at Skate And Surf Festival, as well as five thousand dollars in cash and prizes.

“The Break Contest” runners-up from the finals included first runner-up, LovElectric, second runner-up, The Warden & F.A.M.E. and other runners-up included Gifford’s Lane, Madelae, The B-List, The Project, Soul Melodic, WhoWeAre, Time Will Tell, The New Royalty, Backyard Superheroes, and Small Town Scoundrels will also perform during the festival. Additionally, five of “The Break Contest” finalists, First To Friday, What About Planes, Broken Hinge, East of Insanity and Joy Ride were chosen as runners-up through an online Wild Card survey hosted by AbsolutePunk.net and they also earned a festival performance slot.
