Hackulous Takes Down Installous – iPhone Users Morn The Day

December 30, 2012 by

In huge tech news…

After years of perhaps being the “best” reason to jailbreak your iPhone, Hackulous has decided to take down Installous. Installous was an app that was downloaded from Cydia, which allowed you to “try apps before you buy.” Others would call it piracy. There are other Cydia apps out there like AppCake which offer the same services, so all is not lost.

Did the pressure from Apple shut them down? Did someone get a massive payoff to shut down the service? We may never know, but devs are still working to jailbreak the iPhone 5 (which is an amazing phone BTW).

Here’s what the Hackulous Team had to say:

Goodnight, sweet prince.
We are very sad to announce that Hackulous is shutting down. After many years, our community has become stagnant and our forums are a bit of a ghost town. It has become difficult to keep them online and well-moderated, despite the devotion of our staff. We’re incredibly thankful for the support we’ve had over the years and hope that new, greater communities blossom out of our absence.

With lots of love,
Hackulous Team

DAMN.

Menomena Releases New Album “Moms”

September 18, 2012 by

Barsuk Records is excited to release Menomena’s new album Moms, out today. The full album is currently streaming HERE. Moms is the Portland-based band’s fifth album, and their first as a duo. Next week, the band will begin their fall headlining tour, which features support from PVT. The tour will be followed by a European tour with support from Stacks, as well as an appearance at the revered All Tomorrow’s Parties festival in the UK.

Early praise for Moms is rolling in, with Pitchfork proclaiming “Moms is without doubt the most aggressive record Menomena have ever made” and calling the lead single “Heavy Is As Heavy Does” “gloriously morose.” Rolling Stone likewise praised the track as “an emotive outburst of a song that expertly sidesteps melodrama – confessional rock thrills without the cheesy aftertaste.” Paste remarked that the record is “the most candid and personal Menomena release to date,” while Under the Radar called Menomena “one of the most well thought-out bands working today, never sacrificing structure or composition in the name of delivering a series of power chords.” Alarm declared that Moms “is arguably Menomena’s best effort to date.”

During the last decade, Menomena has become its own reference point. From hooks wrapped around plummeting baritone saxophone lines and nearly inhuman rhythms to serpentine lyrical frameworks and high-concept album art, Menomena has established a singular and unmistakable aesthetic. They embed magic and mystery within pop songs that have never sat still or taken the path of least pressure.

After 2010′s irrepressible and intricate Mines, Menomena co-founder Brent Knopf took his leave to focus on his solo project causing Justin Harris and Danny Seim – close friends since high school and now well into their second decade of making music together-to recast Menomena as a duo. They didn’t slow down; they actually sped up, writing, recording and releasing Moms with more focus and speed than ever before.

Harris and Seim didn’t invite loads of friends or collaborators to replace Knopf; they made these songs as a duo, intent on proving-directly to themselves, and by extension, to everyone else – that Menomena essentially remains the same brazen band responsible for Friend and Foe, Under an Hour and all the gut-punch, pop-ambition moments therein. They added new instruments, like flute, cello, more of Seim’s synthesizers and the tap-dancing that actually laces through the teasing-then-charging opus, “Don’t Mess with Latexas.” For the first time, Harris and Seim, who each contribute five songs here, talked about what they were writing, too. Seim explored the death of his mother when he was but a teenager, while Harris investigated the way his own family dynamic – a single mom, with a departed dad-left indelible impressions on everything he’s done since. The album’s pieces connect, then, addressing how people must rise to face or flee circumstances beyond their control. It’s perhaps the most appropriately imaginable prompt for a band whose last two years have depended upon their ability to explore, adapt and improve.

The result, Moms, is tragic and intimate, comic and endearing, personal and motivated. In 10 songs and just less than 50 minutes, Harris and Seim cast pop cascades into noise kaleidoscopes (“Baton”), chop and twist a melody until it becomes a big dance beat (“Capsule”), and build inescapable arrays of tension and texture that finally release (“Tantalus”). Opener “Plumage” couples its surge of energy with a cleverly playful study of sexuality, while “Pique” turns the same sort of impossible tessellated-rhythm tricks that have become a Menomena trademark.

At the close of it all, the slow strangle of “One Horse” arrives as the most poignant moment yet in Menomena’s catalogue, piano plinking and strings sliding beneath Seim’s existential evasion. It’s the perfect summary statement for Moms, an album that explores both a new vulnerability and resiliency within Menomena, a duo that’s taken change not as an excuse to opt out but instead as a catalyst for growth.

Superfly Productions and A.C. Entertainment are proud to announce the dates for the 12th annual Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival. Confirmed to take place June 13 – 16, 2013, the four-day festival will once again be held at the same beautiful, 700-acre farm in Manchester, Tennessee, 60 miles southeast of Nashville. Special, limited ticket pre-sale information will be announced in November. A video announcing the 2013 dates was made exclusively for Bonnaroo featuring the incomparable Carrie The Dancing Merengue Dog. It can be viewed HERE. Bloggers feel free to post it.

After yet another unforgettable sell-out year in 2012 from what USA Today called “the godfather of American rock festivals,” Bonnaroo organizers are once again back to the drawing board, ensuring that next year’s event will have one of the most eclectic and striking lineups as well as the most diverse selection of entertainment options of any festival in the country. The breadth of the programming is consistently innovative and has become one of the key signature aspects of this legendary festival, whose uniquely open minded yet discerning and passionate community thrives on its intelligent diversity.

In 2012, Bonnaroo continued its long-history of making a strong impact on the American music industry. Rolling Stone said that the festival always makes good on its “surreal surprises,” while Billboard called it “a major music event,” and a “rite of passage” for bands. The Huffington Post declared “the festival gets better every year,” while Pitchfork said it “lends itself to discovery of the new.” Jay-Z’s website. Life and Times, hailed, “Of all the major North American summer festivals, Bonnaroo always manages to stand apart.”

The festival is also now a major force in the comedy world, as it has featured some of today’s best talent and is now considered to be an essential play for every comedian both established and on the rise.

Until fans arrive back in Manchester, the next best thing to being there is the unprecedented online experience at the festival’s YouTube channel, Bonnaroo 365, where fans can tap into the Bonnaroo spirit all year long. From Jack White’s stunning surprise performance in the woods at Outside Lands to exclusive intimate performances backstage at Bonnaroo known as “The Hay Bale Sessions” (FUN. Hay Bale Session can be seen HERE). From fans connecting directly with superstars like Fun. and Big Boi via “Fan Chat” to hearing incredible musicians like Rage Against The Machine’s Tom Morello, “Tellin Stories” about the nerves before a first performance with Springsteen, Bonnaroo 365 is the destination for music performances and discoveries.

Like Bonnaroo, Bonnaroo 365 is a home for great comedy as well. Watch Rhys Darby prep Ben Folds Five for their set HERE.

And this October, Bonnaroo 365 will take you backstage with D’Angelo for a four-part series on the most talked-about concert of the year – The Bonnaroo 2012 SuperJam; the show where D’angelo made his incredible surprise comeback performance, his first on US soil in 12 years, at an all-star show curated and led by ?uestlove from The Roots.

Bonnaroo 365 features original programming created and curated by the festival producers and is a partnership between Bonnaroo and YouTube.

As the only round-the-clock major U.S. music festival, Bonnaroo packs an unparalleled amount of entertainment options into its four days. The event has offered its attendees the amenities and community spirit of a small city, with 24 hours of activities including a comedy theater, cinema festival, broo’ers festival, silent disco, salon, sustainable gardening lessons, arcade, Internet cafés, restaurants, yoga classes and hundreds of high quality food and craft vendors.

The Bonnaroo 2013 line up will be announced in February.

Massive Attack – Blue Lines: 2012 Remix/Remaster

September 11, 2012 by

On November 20th EMI will release a 2012 version of Massive Attack’s classic Blue Lines album, remixed and remastered from the original tapes at the band’s studios in Bristol.

Originally released in April 1991 on the Circa imprint via Virgin Records, Blue Lines was an unprecedented mixture of breakbeats, sampling and live instrumentation with vocal styles ranging from soulful female to gritty rapping. With influences as diverse as soul, punk, reggae, dub, lover’s rock, electro and hip hop, Blue Lines was truly groundbreaking, and remains one of the most unique and influential British albums ever made.

From the first track, the ominous and bass-heavy Safe From Harm, to the insouciant British rapping on Five Man Army and title track Blue Lines, through the album’s best-known track and stone-cold classic Unfinished Sympathy, and Horace Andy and Neneh Cherry’s sweet vocals on album closer Hymn Of The Big Wheel as well as the album’s distinctive sleeve (which was designed by the band’s D), Blue Lines perfectly distilled all the band’s influences into a unique sound and aesthetic that redefined the musical landscape worldwide and reverberates throughout it to this day.

The 2012 Remix/Master will be available on a single CD format, standard and high resolution digital downloads, and as a Deluxe Box which will contain the CD, DVD with 96K/24 bit high resolution audio files, the album split over two 180g vinyl LPs and the original 24″ x 18″ Blue Lines promo poster. Both will be packaged in 5″ and 12″ card mailers, respectively, with the album’s artwork screen-printed per the original release.
