Weekend one is in the books and Coachella came out swinging for its 25th year.
Friday belonged to reunions. The xx played together for the first time in eight years at sunset, ran through Angels, VCR, and Crystalised, and closed with Intro as the outro, which is the most xx move imaginable.
Sabrina Carpenter turned the main stage into Sabrinawood. Full Hollywood dream: elaborate sets, choreography, outfit changes, a Susan Sarandon monologue interlude, and Will Ferrell showing up as an impromptu electrician. No musical surprise guest, and honestly she did not need one. People are calling it the best show of her career.
Then there was Bieberchella. Justin Bieber finally headlined Coachella and did the last thing anyone expected: a stripped back 90 minute set where he scrolled through YouTube on his laptop singing along to his own old videos. Weird? Yes. Kind of perfect for him? Also yes. The Kid LAROI, Tems, Wizkid, Mk.gee, and Dijon all stopped by.
Karol G closed Sunday as the first Latina headliner in festival history. She reportedly spent three times her fee on production, brought a full female mariachi band, danced to Daddy Yankee's Rompe, and brought out Becky G, Mariah Angeliq, and Wisin. She was 30 minutes late and got cut short by curfew, which is the most Coachella sentence ever written.
Elsewhere:
Teddy Swims turned his set into a revolving door with Joe Jonas, Vanessa Carlton, and David Lee Roth doing Jump. Jennifer Lopez crashed David Guetta's set. Travis Barker sat in with Clipse. KATSEYE brought the KPop Demon Hunters crew out for Golden. Swae Lee's kid stole the show in a Spider-Man costume.
Weekend one set the bar. Weekend two has some serious catching up to do.
