Here's a sentence I didn't expect to type today: Europe's twelfth album is really good fun.
Come This Madness came out Friday on Silver Lining Music, nine years after their last studio record. They recorded it in Stockholm with Tom Dalgety producing, and it sounds like a band that knows exactly who they are. Big choruses, soaring melodies, and a harder edge than you might remember.
Joey Tempest said they wrote it in the spirit of the old days, and you can hear it. The singles One On One, The Cult of Ignorance, and Scandinavian Eyes were already out, and the title track just got its own video.
The timing is no accident. It's 40 years since The Final Countdown turned these guys into worldwide stars, and on September 30 they kick off a big European tour in Glasgow built around that anniversary.
Forty years of the countdown and they're still writing new chapters instead of just playing the hits. Respect.
