U2 opened the Sphere and it sounds like the future

All 12 Achtung Baby songs, an acoustic Rattle and Hum mid-set, and Paul McCartney in the house. The Sphere's first concert was a stunner.

The first concert at the Sphere happened last night and it was U2, which feels exactly right. Twenty two songs, and all twelve from Achtung Baby made the cut, some for the first time in decades. So Cruel had not been played since 1992.

The middle of the show went quiet on purpose. An acoustic run through Rattle and Hum, All I Want Is You, Desire, Angel of Harlem, Love Rescue Me, with the visuals pulled way back to show off how intimate the room can be. Then back into Achtung Baby for Acrobat and Ultraviolet, and an encore of Elevation, the new single Atomic City, Vertigo, Streets, With or Without You, and Beautiful Day.

Bono worked in bits of Purple Rain, Into the Mystic, and Love Me Tender along the way. Paul McCartney was in the audience, which Bono called like having Mozart in the building. His first words on the night: What a fancy pad. Then, Elvis has definitely not left this building.

Bram van den Berg filled in on drums for Larry Mullen Jr. The residency runs through December. Good luck topping this.
